Which Treats of a Mirror and its Fragments

Here we are, let us commence.
When we get to the end of our story, we shall know much more than we do now;
for we have among our characters a wicked blackbird; the most wicked of all:
the Devil.
Voyons, nous commençons. Lorsque nous serons au
bout de notre conte, nous en saurons bien plus que maintenant, car nous avons
parmi nos personnages un vilain merle, le plus méchant de tous, le Diable.
One day, when he was in a
merry mood, he ended up making a mirror with a marvellous property:
Un jour il était de bien bonne humeur: il venait de
confectionner un miroir qui avait une merveilleuse propriété:
the good and the beautiful
reflected in it disappeared almost entirely, while everything that was bad or
displeasing was, on the contrary, magnified; it took on excessive proportions.
le beau et le bien qui s’y réfléchissant,
disparaissaient presque entièrement; tout ce qui était mauvais ou déplaisant
ressortait, au contraire, et prenait des proportions excessives.
The most beautiful landscapes,
through this means, resembled boiled spinach.
Les plus admirable paysages, par ce moyen,
ressemblaient des épinards cuits.
The most respected and honest
people appeared to be monsters; the most handsome seemed to be phony; or they
looked upside down; they had almost no body, such was their gauntness.

la tête en bas; ils n’avaient presque plus de corps, tant ils étaient amincis;
Their faces were contorted,
grimacing, and unrecognisable. The smallest blemish or freckle became enormous,
and covered the nose and cheeks.

“This is indeed amusing!” said
the Devil, in contemplating his work.

When a good or pious thought
passed through the mind of any one, the mirror made it crinkle and shake.

l’esprit d'un homme, la miroir se plissait et tremblait.
The Devil laughed more and
more with delight – such a nice invention.
Le Diable enchanté riait de plus en plus de sa
gentille invention.
The student devils that went
to his school — for he was a professor of sorcery — went everywhere telling of
an enormous and incalculable miracle finally accomplished.
Les diablotins qui venaient chez lui à l'école —
car il était professeur de diablerie — allèrent conter partout qu’un progrès
énorme, incalculable, s’accomplissait enfin:
It was only from that day, that
one could really see what the world and human beings were really like.
c’était seulement à partir de ce jour qu’on pouvait
voir au juste ce qu’il en était du monde et des humains.
They travelled across the
entire universe with the famous mirror, and soon there was not a land nor a
people who had not been reflected as some type of caricature.
Ils coururent par tout l’univers avec le fameux
miroir, et bientôt il n'y eut plus un pays, plus un homme qui ne s’y fut
réfléchi avec des formes de caricature.
Then, being more bold, they
took to flying towards the heavens, to mock the angels and our good Lord.
Ensuite, plus hardis, ils se mirent à voler vers le
ciel pour se moquer des anges et du bon Dieu.
The higher they climbed, and
the closer they came to the celestial abodes, the more the mirror contorted and
trembled: due to the divine objects reflected in it. They could hardly hold it;
indeed it was a great struggle.
Plus ils montaient et s’approchaient des demeures
célestes, plus le miroir se contournait et frémissait, à cause des objets
divins qui s’y reflétaient; à peine s’ils pouvaient le tenir, tant il se
démenait.
They continued to fly still
higher; still closer to the angels, and to God.
Ils continuèrent de voler toujours plus haut,
toujours plus près des anges et de Dieu.
Suddenly, the mirror trembled
so strongly that it escaped the hands of the impudent student devils; it fell
on the earth, where it broke into millions, or even billions of pieces.
Tout à coup le miroir trembla tellement qu’il échappa
aux mains des diablotins impudents; il retomba sur la terre où il se brisa en
des millions, de milliards de morceaux.
However, it then caused even
more misery than before.
Mais il causa alors bien plus de malheurs
qu'auparavant.
Some of the debris was not
bigger than a grain of sand. The wind scattered them across the vast world.
Ses débris n’étaient pas plus gros que des grains
de sable. Le vent les éparpilla à travers le vaste monde.
Well, some people received
this grave dust in their eyes. Once there, it remained, and so these people saw
everything as being bad, ugly, and upside down.
Bien des gens reçurent de cette funeste poussière
dans l'œil. Une fois là, elle y restait, et les gens voyaient tout en mal, tout
en laid, et tout à l’envers.
They could not see other than
the worst in each creature – that the defects were all a thing was; for each of
the imperceptible fragments had the same properties as the mirror when it was
whole.
Ils n’apercevaient plus que la tare de chaque
créature, que les défectuosités de tonte chose; car chacun des imperceptibles
fragments avait la même propriété que le miroir entier.
More so, it was that some
splinters pierced right into the hearts of certain people; the result was
dreadful. The hearts of these people became like a block of ice; utterly cold
and numb.
Bien plus, il y’eut de ces morceaux qui
descendirent jusqu’au cœur de certaines personnes; alors c’était épouvantable,
le cœur de ces personnes devenait comme un morceau de glace, aussi froid et
aussi insensible.
Out the countless pieces of
debris from the mirror, there remained some large fragments; several of which
were as big as window panes – it was not good to look at your friends through
these.
Outre ces innombrables petits débris, il resta du
miroir quelques fragments plus considérables, quelques-uns grands comme des
carreaux de vitre: il ne faisait pas bon de considérer ses amis à travers
ceux-ci.
Still others served as lenses
for spectacles. Sorcerers put these over their eyes to (seemingly) see clearly,
and to discern with a refined sense of justice.
D'autres servirent de verres de lunettes: les
méchants mettaient sur leurs yeux pour paraître voir clair et discerner avec
une exacte justice.
When they had these glasses
upon their noses, they laughed and sniggered like the Devil himself looking in
his own mirror.

The ugliness that they
discovered everywhere considerably flattered and tickled their perverse
spirits.

It was a gigantic mirror; the
wind continued to spread the debris through the air.
C’était un gigantesque miroir; le vent continua

A Little Boy and a Little Girl
Un Petit Garçon et une Petite Fille
In a large town – where there
were so many houses, and so many families and people, not everybody could have
a garden – most had to be content with several flower pots.
Dans une grande ville il y a tant de maisons, tant
de familles, tant de monde, que tous ne peuvent avoir un jardin; la plupart
doivent se contenter de quelques pots de fleurs.
Two poor children had found a
way of having more than a pot of flowers – it was almost a real garden.
Deux enfants de pauvres gens avaient trouvé moyen
d’avoir mieux qu’un pot de fleurs et presque un jardin.
Their parents lived in a
narrow alley; and they lived in two attics, the one facing the other.
Leur parents demeuraient dans une étroite ruelle;
ils habitaient deux mansardes en face l’une de l’autre.
The rooves of the two houses
almost touched; such that one could, without danger, pass from one gutter to
the other, and pay a visit.
Les toits des deux maisons se touchaient presque:
on pouvait sans danger passer d’une gouttière à l’autre et se rendre visite.
In front of their window, each
child had a big wooden box filled with soil, where grew garden herbs for the
household; also, in each box was a single rose.
Les enfants avaient devant leur fenêtre chacun une
grande caisse de bois remplie de terre, où il poussait des herbes potagères
pour le ménage, et aussi dans chaque caisse un rosier.
The parents had the idea of
putting the boxes across the little alley, from one window to the other.

This was a considerable
enhancement: the peas drooped their branches and the roses joined up, with
their flowers forming a veritable arch of triumphant splendour.
ce fut un embellissement considérable: le pois
suspendant leurs branches, les rosiers joignant, leurs fleurs formaient comme
un arc de triomphe magnifique.
The children would come and
sit on their little stools amongst the roses.
Les enfants venaient s'assoir sur de petits bancs
entre les rosiers.
What pleasure it was when they
were permitted to go and amuse themselves together in this sky bed!
Quel plaisir, quand on leur permettait d’aller
s’amuser ensemble dans ce parterre aérien!
They were not brother and
sister, but they loved each other as if they were.
Ils n’étaient pas frère et sœur, mais ils
s’aimaient autant.
In winter, their pleasures
were interrupted. The windows were often frosted: the glass panes covered with
a layer of ice.
L'hiver, leur plaisirs étaient interrompus. Les
fenêtres étaient souvent gelées et les carreaux couverts d’une couche de glace.
The children would then warm a
copper coin on the stove; they would apply it on the window pane, and it would
form a little round peep hole. On each side of the hole sparkled a sweet and
mischievous little eye: it was the little children. His name was Kay, and she
was called Gerda.
Les enfants faisaient alors chauffer un schilling
de cuivre sur le poêle, ils l’appliquaient sur le carreau, et cela formait un
petit judas tout rond, derrière lequel étincelait de chaque côté un petit œil
doux et riant: c’étaient les petits enfants. Il se nommait Kay, elle se nommait
Gerda.
In summer, they could then go
from one house to the other in one leap.
En été, ils
pouvaient donc aller l'un chez l'autre d’un seul saut.
In winter, they had to first
descend a number of stairs, and then go up as many. As it was winter, the
snowflakes fluttered by the thousands.
En hiver, il leur d'abord descendre de nombreux
escaliers et en remonter autant. On était en hiver. Au dehors la neige
voltigeait par milliers de flocons.
“Those are the white bees,”
said the grandmother.
« Ce sont les abeilles blanches, » dit la
grand-mère.
“Do they also have a queen?”
asked the little boy, for he knew that bees usually have one.
« Ont-elles aussi une reine? » demanda le
petit garçon, car il savait que les abeilles en ont une.
“Certainly,” said the
grandmother. “Look, she is flying there where the swarm is thickest.
« Certainement, » dit la grand-mère. « La
voilà qui vole là-bas ou elles sont en masse.
She is the largest of them
all, and never stays in one place; she is always buzzing around.
Elle est la plus grande de toutes. Jamais elle ne
reste en place, tant elle est voltigeant.
She is on the ground, and then
suddenly she sets off to hide in the dark clouds.
Est-elle sur terre, tout à coup elle repart se
cacher dans les nuages noirs.
On winter nights, it is she
who flies through village streets, looking through the windows; which then
freeze and become covered with bizarre flowers.”
Dans les nuits d’hiver, c’est elle qui traverse les
rues des villes et regarde à travers les fenêtres, qui gèlent alors et se
couvrent de fleurs bizarres. »
“Yes, yes, I have seen this!”
said the two children at the same time; and they knew that what the grandmother
said must be true.
« Oui, oui, c’est ce que j’ai vu! »

“Can the Snow Queen come in
here?” asked the little girl.

“So let her come,” said the
boy. “I will put her on the burning stove, and she will melt.”
« Qu’elle vienne donc, » dit Kay, « je la
mettrai sur le poêle brulant et elle fondra. »
The grandmother simply stroked
his hair, and told some other stories.
Mais la grand-mère se mit à lui lisser les cheveux
et raconta d’autres histoires.
On that evening, little Kay
was in his room; he was half undressed, and ready for bed.
Le soir de ce jour, le petit Kay était chez lui, à
moitié déshabillé, prêt à se coucher.
He put his chair against the
window and climbed on it – in order to peep through the little round hole that
was made by the warm penny.
Il mit une chaise contre la fenêtre et grimpa

A few flakes of snow were falling
gently. The largest of them landed on the edge of one of the flower boxes.

It grew and grew, and ended up
forming a young woman – even bigger than Gerda. She was dressed in the finest
white mesh, embroidered with starry snowflakes.

She was beautiful and
gracious, but made completely of ice. Yet, she was so alive: her eyes gleamed
like stars in a winter sky, though they were constantly moving.

d’hiver, et étaient sans cesse en mouvement.
Her face turned towards the
window, and she made a sign with her hand. The little boy was frightened and
jumped down from the chair.
La figure se tourna vers la fenêtre et fit un signe
de la main. Le petit garçon eut peur et sauta à bas de la chaise.
A noise came from outside, as
if a great bird had passed in front of the window, with its wing brushing the
glass.
Un bruit se fit dehors, comme si un grand oiseau
passait devant la fenêtre et de son aile frôlait la vitre.
The following day there was a
clear frost, and then came the spring.
Le lendemain il y eut une belle gelée. Puis vint le
printemps;
The sun came out; the greenery
shot away; the swallows built their nests; the windows opened; and the two
children once again sat, the one across from the other, in their little garden
high up on the roof.
le soleil apparut, la verdure poussa, les
hirondelles bâtirent leurs nids, les fenêtres s’ouvrirent, et les deux enfants
se retrouvèrent assis à côté l’un de l’autre dans leur petit jardin là-haut sur
le toit.
How the flowers flourished
superbly that summer! And how the garden was such a pleasure!
Comme les roses fleurirent superbement cet été! et
que le jardin se para à plaisir!
The little girl had learnt by
heart a hymn where the theme was of roses; when she thought of it, she was
reminded of those in her own garden.
La petite fille avait appris par cœur un cantique
où il était question de roses; quand elle le disait, elle pensait à celles de
son jardin.
She sang it to the little boy,
and as he learnt it, the two of them were soon singing in unison:
Elle le chanta devant le petit garçon, elle le lui
apprit, et tous deux unirent bientôt leurs voix pour chanter:
The roses arise and fade away;
but soon we will again see Christmas and the baby Jesus.
Les roses passent et se fanent. Mais bientôt, nous

The two little ones kissed the
flowers, as if to say goodbye.
Les deux petits embrassaient les fleurs comme pour
leur dire adieu.
They looked at the bright
sunshine, and almost hoped the sun would hasten on its course, such that they
might see baby Jesus sooner.
Ils regardaient la clarté du soleil, et
souhaitaient presque, qu’il hâtât sa course pour revoir plus vite l’enfant
Jésus.
